DEI & Health Equity

Help Health Equity Take Root in Your Community

Inequities in health outcomes have been well documented. From the report Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care (National Academy of Medicine, 2003) to the Healthy People 2010 Report‘s emphasis on eliminating racial inequities, the healthcare industry has known that change must come. Unfortunately it took the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on minority populations, and 2020’s social unrest highlighting our nation’s complex, ongoing struggle with racial equity, to put a proper focus on health inequities. The healthcare field is responding to health and racial equity with an effort that has not been seen before.

The Racial Equity in Healthcare Progress Report

The Racial Equity in Healthcare Progress Report is a long-term accountability tool to document progress toward achieving racial health equity. It provides a baseline self-assessment and then an opportunity to measure progress, assess implementation of key strategies, understand provider and community assets in racial equity work, and identify areas of improvement. Thanks to a 2022 grant from the Commonwealth Fund, we are partnering with RUSH University Medical Center to disseminate the progress report and to help test and validate it on a national scale.

We are thrilled to engage a national audience in this health and racial equity improvement effort. Working together, our industry can dismantle systemic racism in a way that no individual organization can. The Progress Report, and the digital equity hub we’ve created to house it, highlights the important progress that organizations have already made as well as the work ahead.

DEI Programming

We have experience engaging with this work at the strategic level, but conversations on diversity and health equity must occur across the organization. Partnering with Mezala Consulting, and using a suite of custom tools, we have engaged hundreds of people in small interactive workshops where people can creatively tackle very complex challenges. We are able to collect the data from these workshops to deliver analysis on the current state of the organization and recommendations on potential changes.

THA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workshop

Our partners at the Tennessee Hospital Association hosted a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workshop, which we designed as a day-long engagement for teams to focus on moving their organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts forward. Through a set of canvas-based activities, teams took their knowledge and experience and ideated around furthering DEI work, whether they were searching for an area of focus or had a project already underway. We first encouraged teams to take a critical look at their own data, pick an area of focus, and then to ideate around potential solutions. All teams walked out of the DEI workshop with a plan they could begin to validate and operationalize.

The Objective

This is the objective section. Here, we clearly state why we were hired, what the goals are, what the metrics for success are, and what the macro impact of the project is. Questions to remember: Why is this work important to this company? What do they have to gain? Lose? What have they lost already by not tackling this issue?
GET SPECIFIC. Do not attempt to vaguely market toward other businesses.
